MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship

The MEXT Research Scholarship, one of the most sought-after and prestigious scholarships, is granted by the Japanese government to international students to study at the country’s universities. Bachelor’s and Master’s students can study at 90% of Japan’s universities with either partial or full cost coverage.

Bachelor’s degree

  • Monthly allowance of 117,000 yen (students and researchers in certain regions receive an additional monthly supplement of 2,000 or 3,000 yen)
  • Coverage of entrance exams, registration, and tuition fees
  • Travel expenses, including arrival to and departure from Japan

Master’s degree

  • Monthly allowance of 144,000 yen (143,000 yen during preparatory education). Students and researchers in certain regions receive an additional monthly supplement of 2,000 or 3,000 yen.
  • Coverage of entrance exams, registration, and tuition fees
  • Travel expenses, including arrival to and departure from Japan

Criteria
  • The applicant must be in good medical shape
  • Plans to come and study in Japan without engaging in any other activities
  • Applicants must be between 17 and 35 years old
Required Application Materials

Bachelor’s degree (12 years of secondary education):

  • Application form and its attachment
  • Transcript of grades for all academic years
  • Authenticated copy of the diploma
  • 1 recommendation letter from a headmaster or teacher
  • Medical certificate
  • Optional documents: Proof of passing the university entrance exam

Master’s degree (16 years of education (12 years of secondary education + 4 years of bachelor’s degree)):

  • Application form and its attachment
  • Research plan
  • Academic transcripts for all years of university
  • Authenticated copy of the diploma
  • University recommendation
  • Medical certificate
  • Synopsis of the research
  • Workplace recommendation (if the applicant is currently employed)

For specialists in music and art: portfolio and/or performance tapes

Note for Master’s degree: Only the field of study in which the applicant was enrolled in their university. If the candidate’s preferred research area and other factors are associated with Japan’s sanctions against Russia, the application will be declined.

All documents should be filled out in either English or Japanese, or should be accompanied by a certified translation in one of these languages

If applicable: IELTS for studying in English, JPLT for studying in Japanese

Students optionally or mandatorily undertake 1 preparatory year of English and/or Japanese

The application documents must be mailed to the Embassy in Moscow or the Japanese Consulate General, or personally delivered (or by a representative of the applicant). Fax and electronic document submissions are not permitted! Yakutia residents can mail their documents to the Japanese Consulate General.
