The MEXT Research Scholarship, one of the most sought-after and prestigious scholarships, is granted by the Japanese government to international students to study at the country’s universities. Bachelor’s and Master’s students can study at 90% of Japan’s universities with either partial or full cost coverage.
Bachelor’s degree
- Monthly allowance of 117,000 yen (students and researchers in certain regions receive an additional monthly supplement of 2,000 or 3,000 yen)
- Coverage of entrance exams, registration, and tuition fees
- Travel expenses, including arrival to and departure from Japan
Master’s degree
- Monthly allowance of 144,000 yen (143,000 yen during preparatory education). Students and researchers in certain regions receive an additional monthly supplement of 2,000 or 3,000 yen.

Bachelor’s degree (12 years of secondary education):

For specialists in music and art: portfolio and/or performance tapes
Note for Master’s degree: Only the field of study in which the applicant was enrolled in their university. If the candidate’s preferred research area and other factors are associated with Japan’s sanctions against Russia, the application will be declined.
